High School / Private School Entrance Exam
If your child's goal is to get accepted into a private high school, private school or a college prep high school it takes more than good grades. Most schools have a minimum test score that must be achieved before the student is accepted. Having a good test score is important since high school admission these days is so competitive. Below are two of the most popular tests that schools around the nation utilize.
The SSAT is the Secondary School Admissions Test. Private schools throughout the world use the SSAT as a standardized admissions test. Since curricula, teaching and assessment standards vary from school to school, a standardized test is one tool admissions personnel use to determine if an applicant can do the work at their school. The test consists of a short essay and multiple choice aptitude questions. The aptitude testing concentrates on math, reading comprehension and the use of language.
Quantitative (2 separate sections; each contains 25 questions, 30 minutes) tests your knowledge of general mathematical concepts, including arithmetic, algebra, and geometry. There are no quantitative comparison questions.
Verbal (60 questions, 30 minutes) tests your knowledge of vocabulary using two different question types: synonyms and analogies. There are no sentence completions.
Reading (40 questions, 40 minutes) tests your ability to read and understand short passages. These reading passages include both fiction (including poetry and folklore) and nonfiction.
Essay (1 essay topic, 25 minutes) is not scored, but a copy is forwarded to the schools to which you apply.
